I started working in Tierra Urbana just after my first semester at school, I was an amateur programmer and Linux hobbyst and they offered me the opportunity to start a career in programming and administration.
I was responsible for the network, desktop machines, email and web servers and also for programming the Web frontend to an internal application that allowed the executives to review the progress on certain key projects.
The system was specially tailored around the needs for construction/housing projects and allowed the supervisors to report directly from the field.
During my time there, some of the highlight projects I completed were:
- Create a network to communicate several offices connected with different ISPs to allow them to share documents, databases and web filter policies
- Design and implementation of a new network to provide advanced services to desktop clients like LDAP, Windows Roaming Profiles, IMAP mailboxes, automatic backup, centrally managed virus protection and other administrative tasks using mostly open source software
- Design and implementation of a Documentation Management System based on the network services and simple file management for ease of use
I had to leave Tierra Urbana because at the time school was my main priority, and didn't have the time to work full time and fullfill my duties as a student. To date I still have a good relationship with them and they still call me when they have problems with any of the projects that I participated in.
